Total Eclipse Is Monday!

Future Wonder is excited to be at the center of a monumental event! Bloomington, Indiana will be in the path of totality for the upcoming solar eclipse crossing over North America. Not only will we experience a partial eclipse from 1:49 p.m. to 4:22 p.m. EDT but we are also ideally situated to view a total eclipse for 4 minutes and 3 seconds between 3:04 p.m. and 3:08 p.m. EDT Of course, we are hoping for sunny skies. You can get the latest Bloomington forecast from the National Weather Service here.

Totality is the part worth planning for. Over four minutes of darkness is rare, and the change is unmistakable: daylight thins into a deep blue-gray twilight, the air cools, shadows sharpen, and the world goes quiet as if everything is holding its breath. Then the sun’s corona appears like a bright, delicate halo, and for a few minutes the entire landscape feels transformed. If you want to make the most of it, plan to be in a clear spot well before totality begins and give yourself buffer time.

Finally, looking directly at the eclipse is dangerous. Be sure to use your eclipse glasses and review this information from NASA on how to safely view the event.

This event is also a reminder that preparation matters. Having the right gear, knowing the timing, and planning ahead makes the experience better (and safer).

An April 2024 update:

Many people expected heavy travel and traffic, so a lot of locals and businesses planned accordingly. In practice, Bloomington and Monroe County felt quieter than the “huge visitor wave” predictions. For local updates and community info, the City of Bloomington maintained resources here.
