What is RTO?

What is RTO?

No, really, we had to look it up. RTO is short for "Return To Office". Many organizations have been pushing employees back into offices and we can’t help but ask: why?

Companies cite a few common reasons for RTO:

  • Collaboration and “serendipitous” conversations
  • Faster onboarding for new teammates
  • Security and compliance constraints (depending on the work)
  • Real-estate decisions already made

The tradeoff is real. Commutes and rigid schedules can reduce productivity, widen hiring constraints, and make it harder for teams to attract and retain great people.

Future Wonder is proud of our “work from wherever you are” culture, which we embraced from our launch in May 2016. If you have an internet connection and a computer, you can be a productive member of our team. Not only is your location flexible, but so are the hours.

What makes remote work successful (in our experience) is process and communication:

  • Clear goals and written specs
  • Async-first updates and lightweight ceremonies
  • Great documentation for decisions and handoffs
  • Security best practices (MFA, least privilege, device hygiene)
